State of the Internet – 2009

This video by Jesse Thomas is most definitely worth a look. I pulled out some interesting stats that are found in the video below:

  • 247 billion: Average number of emails per day.
  • 200 billion: Average number of SPAM emails per day.
  • 234 million: The number of websites as of December 2009.
  • 126 million: The number of blogs on the Internet (as tracked by BlogPulse).
  • 27.3 million: Number of tweets on Twitter per day as of November 2009.
  • 2.5 billion: Photos uploaded each month to Facebook.
  • 12.2 billion: Videos viewed per month of YouTube in the US.

The art direction of the video feels just right for the story it tells. This combined with a somewhat repetitive but fun style of music really ties the presentation together well. Love it.

The MacView Concept Tablet Design

Designer Patrycjusz Brzezinski designed the MacView for his diploma project. His work is beautifully designed and very thoughtful/thorough. I know I’d buy a MacView (just so long as it auto-closed in case it was dropped). Read more about the MacView.

World Wildlife Fund AR Campaign

The campaign and the technology behind it.

I like the contrast of the playfulness (putting a virtual bear into the “real world”) with the seriousness (how poorly it fared combined with the real-life impact) of this campaign. Both the timing and the contrast make for a big impact.

“The perhaps awkwardly portrayed message about caring for wildlife got through – visits to and memberships via the WWF website jumped; the former tripled and the latter doubled during a two week campaign.”

What a powerful and new way to make a statement.

Barely A Quarter Of Cellphone Owners Use The Mobile Web

It’s a generational thing.

“Of cellphone owners, the majority (66%) send or receive text messages, and more than half send or receive photos. But only 28% currently access Web pages, and 20% download apps to their cellphones. (Time frame: Oct.-Nov. 2009.)”

YouTube to kill IE6 support on MAR 13

Looks like the tide is turning. The big question is when will the corporate offices of the world upgrade? Soon I hope. Fingers crossed.

iPad Home Automation System

Tell me you didn’t see this one coming from a mile away. Reason #2 for wanting an iPad and I’m sure there will be more reasons on the way. More on the Creston Home Automation System:

“A tap on the Apple tablet screen provides real-time control of Crestron AV systems, lighting, shades, room temperatures and more, from any location. Just like the iPhone® and iPod touch®, the iPad seamlessly communicates with a Crestron control system via the 3G, 3GS or EDGE cellular networks or Wi-Fi.”

Are more home-focused apps on the way?

And for kicks – Hey, didn’t we design our own home automation system a couple years ago (at Outsight)? iPad, where were you when we needed you? :)

Logic + Emotion = Powerful Combination

An ad is supposed to communicate something, connect with people, and get them to change their behavior. This one certainly does all three. Wow.

ZipRealty’s iPhone Application Adds AR to Show Nearby Home Info

Looking to buy a new home? See it before you go in with ZipRealty’s iPhone Application.

The app will overlay “for sale” home information on the image, including the address and distance to home. Clicking on a listing shows all details, including prices, interior photos, square footage and third-party value estimates.

Very cool. I could definitely see myself using this and will be downloading this tonight for a test run. Stay tuned…

BBC’s Digital Services Re-brand: Work in Progress

The BBC workspace. Very inspiring.

Above: Grid system for the redesign.

A great article on the process of re-branding the BBC from the ground up. How they went about this process is very similar to a project I am currently working through. It’s nice to be able to step out of my role and see it unfold in another brand.

I also love the idea of the “wall of shame.” Maybe we’ll end up doing that for our project as well.

The Trivial Pursuit experiment – Who’s smarter than who?

An awesomely addictive site. Once you get in, just click a card and answer a question. If you answer correctly, you increase the score for your gender. And the women are ahead. Dig deep, reveal your inner genius… every man on the planet is relying on you!
