Nokia’s N8 Foosball Fever – Greatest match ever played?

The greatest foosball match ever played. Check it.
Another awesome video for the Nokia N8. The video gets very cool once you get beyond 30 seconds. Very cool!

Nokia is also adding an interesting interactive ending to these vids. Instead of ending the video as usual, they’ve inserted navigation to other videos to help continue the story. The video does eventually play through to the end (with the normal YouTube end screen), but I’d bet this sending a lot more traffic to these other Nokia videos. See the a screen shot below showing what I mean:

I like. A nice way to innovate and story tell in this space.

Working with a Writer

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Erica Horstmeyer of EricaHorstmeyer.com.

Don’t be afraid, we’re just like you. We have our hang-ups, preferences, and caffeine needs. So, after you and your writer have fueled up, compared likes and dislikes on the iPhone, it’s probably time to get to work and meet that deadline of yesterday. Here are a few tips:

#1: Have fun.

Let’s face it, we all got into creating because it beats digging ditches. So as you and the writer figure out all the work that needs to be in done in no time at all, keep a sense of humor.

#2: Game plan.

Discuss how you like to work. Do you want to concept together for a while and then each go off and do your thing? Or vice versa? It may sound simple, but just discussing this will save hours of “WTF is he doing?” later on.

#3: Respect.

It’s the basis of all great relationships. And for better or worse, you and your writer are indeed married to this project and each other for the next few hours/weeks/months.

#4: Lunch.

We all work better when we’re not running on empty. Have lunch together on the first day so you can communicate about other stuff besides work. Who knows what great ideas may spark from the road trip story you share over a burger.

#5: Lose boundaries.

If you’ve got some visual ideas, bounce them off the writer rather than just asking for a headline with a limited word count. It’s pretty amazing where ideas can start and then blossom with a little back and forth.

#6: Have some more fun.

At the end of the day, your ideas may live or die. In this business, we just never know the life expectancy of our ideas. But if you have fun creating them, if you laugh ‘til it hurts, then you know you had a good day at work. And ultimately, good fun leads to good work.

Penultimate: Sketch and Take Notes on Your iPad

This app looks to be great for writing quick notes and jotting down ideas. I can imagine using it in almost every agency situation. I do wonder how well you can actually write and/or get into more detail when needed. Hmm… maybe a quick box wire frame could then link and/or zoom to a “scaled up version” of a particular module on the same (or even another page). Regardless this looks to be an app I will be using soon. Another reason why I will be holding an iPad in my hands in the very near future. Very cool.

Learn more about Penultimate or grab it from the app store.

Going Home? Ask the Magic Ash Cloud

You want to go home, huh?

I was stuck in London a few weeks back due to the ash cloud. I see that the magic ash cloud is back in action, so thought I’d post this as I took this pic during my days of being trapped (though London isn’t that bad of a place to be stuck). My translation is as follows:

Ha ha.
You want to go home.
Just keep thinking yes.
Make a wish. That might help.
You getting depressed? Go eat.
Ha ha.

So, magic ash cloud: was this merely a coincidence or was it planned?

Designing the Nokia N8

Behind the Nokia N8

I love seeing videos of designers talking through their process. Seeing their thoughts, passions, and drive in their body language is super inspiring. Also really liked the idea of not “feeling” like the design is finished until you see it being used in someone’s hands. Very cool.

There are so many videos on process out there that it’s hard to find the real “real” ones. Know of any? Where are they? Let me know by posting your thoughts and/or links in the comment section below.

Hidden Sky: Augmented Reality for Satellites

Hidden Sky is an augmented reality application for the iPhone 3GS.

Now THIS is cool. What an awesome use of augmented reality. I love it.

Hidden Sky allows you to locate any of the more than one thousand satellites that orbit the Earth, the planets, and other objects in the sky. You can observe orbits, animate across the sky, find out when objects will rise and set, learn about the objects, and much more. You can even watch satellites dock, as shown in this video.

When I saw this video, I definitely had a wow moment. You should really check it out. You can also read more about the app at Augmented Planet. Nice!

Post-Season Twitter Playoffs

Twitter Playoffs, a Facebook application for Nike Basketball, captures what everyone is saying about the NBA Playoffs in real-time. You can tweet to root for your favorite team, and see additional tweets and details about your team by expanding your team’s box.

There are multiple layouts for the app, from match ups to the overall bracket. You can also scale your views by all games or each game as an added bonus.

Overall a very nice and fun to use fluid design. I dig.

Now let’s go Celtics!
