Ah, most beautiful perfection. We all strive for it. We all suffer from it. We all love it. We all hate it. I know I have a hard time escaping it. I’m sure many of you do too. Below is why I think we’d be better off without it, and what you can do if the perfection bug decides to bite you.
Remember that feeling you had when you got your design just right? Well, where did it go? What happened? Hit Control-Z on your brain and bring back your intuitive thinking. You’ll be happy that you did.
Nothing waters down a good design like some good ol’ group-think. It’s best to avoid this one. Hah… and you actually thought you could? Okay okay, on a more serious note, group-think isn’t all that bad, and it sort of is a necessary evil. You just need to know when to use it (before you start designing).
I’ve worked with many designers who get stuck pixel fucking. Trust me on this one: it’s a waste of time. Instead, focus on your concept and overall look & feel. Don’t be a pixel fucker. Be a design superstar.
It will help your client participate in the design process and it will also garner buy in. Do this often and I will almost guarantee you success. A lot of magic happens in these sessions for good reason: you’ll be building trust and friendship.
Do this as often as you can. It’s a much better use of your energy.
Know that you’ll get there if you do the two thoughts above. Enough said.
Don’t expect perfection. Instead, expect laughter, collaboration, and fun.
